What to look for

For a computer, a USB webcam that supports the UVC standard usually works without extra drivers on Windows, macOS and Linux, including Raspberry Pi OS. For robotics or machine vision on a Raspberry Pi, a camera module on the ribbon-cable connector leaves the USB ports free and works with Raspberry Pi's own camera software.

Specs that matter

Resolution matters less than the sensor, the lens and the lighting. Check the field of view, whether focus is fixed or automatic, and the frame rate at the resolution you'll actually use. For close-up work, a ring light removes shadows so small parts and markings are readable.

Compatibility tips

The Raspberry Pi 5 uses smaller 22-pin camera connectors than the Pi 4, so older camera modules need an adapter cable. USB cameras draw power from the port, so a powered hub helps when several devices share one computer. Tripods and stands use a standard 1/4-inch thread.
