Quick checks before you order

  • Uno and Mega boards use 5 V logic, so most classic modules connect directly
  • Many compatible boards use a CH340 USB chip that may need a driver
  • The Nano ESP32 adds Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in the small Nano size

Pick the board by pins and memory

The Uno is the easiest place to start, with the most tutorials and shields. Move to a Mega 2560 when you run out of pins or memory, or a Nano-size board when space is tight. For wireless projects, an ESP32-based board such as the Nano ESP32 adds Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Match modules to the board's voltage

Uno and Mega boards work at 5 V, while ESP32 and many newer boards use 3.3 V. Check each sensor, display and driver for its supply voltage and logic level, and use a level shifter where they differ.

Get the basics in the same order

Most projects also need a USB cable that carries data, a breadboard, jumper wires and a few resistors and LEDs. A starter kit bundles these with sensors and is a good way to begin if you don't have a parts bin yet.
