Quick checks before you order

  • The Pi 5 needs a 5 V, 5 A USB-C supply for full USB power; the Pi 4 uses 5 V, 3 A
  • Both boards use micro HDMI for displays
  • GPIO pins are 3.3 V, so don't connect 5 V signals directly

Choose the board for the job

The Raspberry Pi 5 is the fastest choice for a desktop, cameras, AI experiments and home servers. A Pi 4 still handles most home automation and learning projects. More RAM helps with a desktop, browsers and machine learning; a headless sensor or controller needs much less.

Budget for power, storage and cooling

Plan the whole setup, not only the board. You'll need a USB-C supply that meets the board's rating, a microSD card (or an NVMe drive and adapter on the Pi 5), and a case with cooling if it will run under load for long periods.

Check cables and add-ons

Displays connect through micro HDMI, so you'll need the right cable or adapter. Camera modules use a ribbon cable, and the Pi 5's camera connector is smaller than the Pi 4's. HATs and add-on boards should list the Pi models they support.
